The Disability Count Census 2020 Summit is being held on Thursday, February 27, at the Northwest Indiana Region Planning Commission facilities, located at 6100 Southport Road in Portage, Indiana. Time: 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM Register Here
Why is Disability the focus?
Individuals with disabilities are often slighted, typically people do not know how
to approach someone that is different or outside of what they consider the norm.
Therefore, it is necessary to have a discussion where people are introduced to the topic, acquaint them with the do's and don't, and prepare them to ask the question. This Summit will be the event to prepare us how to engage without offending.
Disability is still a stigma in many cultures and communities. Families continue to hide, feel shame or guilt about having a close family member with a disability. As a result, they may not disclose that someone may be living in their home who has a disability.
Although the census questions do not ask as to whether there is a person with a disability living in the household, as a community advocate, community leaders, and as a concerned citizen let's make sure that everyone is included in the census count 2020.
